The Two Towers

A long time ago, in an Italian city, they built a beautiful tower which was admired by everyone passing through. A little further down the road, in a neighbouring city, they had built a tower of similar beauty. The two towers were equally well known.
The people of the second city, envious and filled with pride, planned to destroy the neighbouring tower so it wouldn't take attention away from their own. One dark night, they came to the tower, with picks and shovels, and began to quietly undermine its foundations.
The next morning, the tower was leaning slightly, but nobody seemed to notice. The same happened for the following few days, until a little girl who was passing by pointed up at the tower and said: "I think that the tower is going to fall down." And everyone around looked closely, and could see that she was right.
Nervousness spread through the city. They tried no end of solutions to try to straighten the tower, but the days passed, and nothing seemed to work. That was, until one day when the same little girl was walking by again, and she leant her arm on the side of the tower, to rest. She felt the tower trembling slightly, amid the sound of creaking and groaning. When she took her hand off it, the movement and the noises stopped. And when she put it back on again, the same happened.
The girl spent a while doing this, until she was completely certain of what she had discovered: "The tower is ticklish!!"
She ran to get some flowers and plants, and she planted them right next to the tower. Now if the tower leant over any further it would be tickled by the petals and leaves of those plants. Being a ticklish tower, it would then have to return back to where it had been. In this way, the girl managed to make sure that the tower didn't collapse, but still kept it leaning a little.
The fact that it was leaning made it even more famous, and this taught a fine lesson to the envious people of the neighbouring city. Being jealous types, they tried to copy the lean of the first tower, but they couldn't do it, and the tower ended up collapsing, leaving the city not only without a tower, but also without a city hall.

Moral: When we fail to appreciate the good things others possess, and allow envy to take over, we end up in a lot of trouble.

Never again

I hope the ring you gave to her turns her finger green
I hope when your in bed with her, you think of me
I would never wish bad things, but I don't wish you well
Could you tell, by the flames that burned your words

I never read your letter
'Cos I knew what you'd say
Give me that Sunday school answer
Try and make it all OK

[Chorus]
Does it hurt to know I'll never be there
Bet it sucks, to see my face everywhere
It was you, who chose to end it like you did
I was the last to know
You knew exactly what you would do
And don't say, you simply lost your way
She may believe you but I never will
Never again

If she really knows the truth, she deserves you
A trophy wife, oh how cute
Ignorance is bliss
But when your day comes, and he's through with you
And he'll be through with you
You'll die together but alone

You wrote me in a letter
You couldn't say it right to my face
Give me that Sunday school answer
Repent yourself away

[Chorus]
Does it hurt to know I'll never be there
Bet it sucks, to see my face everywhere
It was you, who chose to end it like you did
I was the last to know
You knew exactly what you would do
And don't say, you simply lost your way
They may believe you but I never will
Never again

[Bridge]
Never again will I hear you
Never again will I miss you
Never again will I fall to you
Never

Never again will I kiss you
Never again will I want to
Never again will I love you
Never

[Chorus]
Does it hurt to know I'll never be there
Bet it sucks, to see my face everywhere
It was you, who chose to end it like you did
I was the last to know
You knew exactly what you would do
And don't say, you simply lost your way
They may believe you but I never will
I never will
I never will

Never again

Jealous

Jealous of the girl who caught your eye
One of my darker days
When you looked at her where was I?
Shoulda been in her place
Here I am
All alone imagining what might have been
What could have been
If I had been there

[Chorus:]
Jealous of the one who'se arms are around you
If she's keeping you satisfied
Jealous of the one who finally found you
Made your sun and your stars collide
La la la la la la la
She's a very very lucky girl
La la la la la la la

Jealous of the one who won your heart
They say it's a perfect match
She's gonna get to be where you are
And I don't get better than that
She'll say you're fine
Whisper words I wish were mine
And they might have been
If I had been there

[Repeat Chorus]

You know I'd fight the good fight
If I thought I'd change your mind
But if she makes you happy
I would leave that dream behind
Man, she better treat you right
And give you everything
Cause at the moment she doesn't
I'll be waiting in the wings

[Repeat Chorus]

La la la la la la la
She's a very very lucky girl

Green Eyed Monster

each time i see a happy pair,
the green eyed monster comes,
he flies to sit upon my shoulder,
and says 'look at those happy ones'

'don't you wish you had someone,
had someone to hold,
someone to have by your side,
to be with while you grow old'

'someone who knows how to fix things,
when you are feeling blue,
even if it means just simply saying
"i love you" '

until the happy couple leave,
the green eyed monster stays.
but even after he's long gone,
he haunts my mind for days.

Teardrops On My Guitar

Drew looks at me, I fake a smile so he won't see
That I want and I'm needing everything that we should be
I'll bet she's beautiful, that girl he talks about
And she's got everything that I have to live without

Drew talks to me, I laugh 'cause it's so just funny
That I can't even see anyone when he's with me
He says he's so in love, he's finally got it right,
I wonder if he knows he's all I think about at night

[Chorus:]
He's the reason for the teardrops on my guitar
The only thing that keeps me wishing on a wishing star
He's the song in the car I keep singing, don't know why I do

Drew walks by me, can he tell that I can't breathe?
And there he goes, so perfectly,
The kind of flawless I wish I could be
She'd better hold him tight, give him all her love
Look in those beautiful eyes and know she's lucky 'cause

[Chorus]

So I drive home alone, as I turn out the light
I'll put his picture down and maybe
Get some sleep tonight

He's the reason for the teardrops on my guitar
The only one who's got enough of me to break my heart
He's the song in the car I keep singing, don't know why I do
He's the time taken up, but there's never enough
And he's all that I need to fall into.

Drew looks at me, I fake a smile so he won't see.

Girl Next Door lyrics

Small town homecoming queen
She's a star in this scene
There's no way to deny she's lovely
Perfect skin, perfect hair
Perfumed hearts everywhere
Tell myself that inside she's ugly

Maybe I'm just jealous-I can't help but hate her
Secretly I wonder if my boyfriend wants to date her

She is the prom queen, I'm in the marching band
She is a cheerleader, I'm sitting in the stands
She gets the top bunk, I'm sleeping on the floor
She's Miss America
And I'm just the girl next door

Senior class president
She must be heaven sent
She was never the last one standing
A backseat debutante
Everything that you want
Never too harsh or too demanding

Maybe I'll admit it, I'm a little bitter
Everybody loves her, but I just wanna hit her…

Chorus

I don't know why I'm feeling sorry for myself
Spend all my time wishing that I was someone else

Chorus
I get a little bit, she gets a little more
She's Miss America
And I'm just the girl next door

A tale of envy and compassion

There was once two houses. One house was on the sunny side of the
street. It was brand spanking new, had a rose garden, a new car, and a
furniture truck was pulling up bringing lots of new couches and beds.

Life seems good.

Across the street, the sun hardly ever shined through the windows. The
house was brown and run down. There was an eviction notice on the door
and the electric was shut off. The siding was coming off the house and
the windows were drafty.

Life seems dismal.

There were two women. One woman lived on the sunny side of the street.
She had long blonde hair and blue eyes and a pretty smile. She had an
easy way about her. Many people wanted to be her friend. The people
didn't stay very long though only long enough to look at all of her
possessions and then they were gone. The woman sat on her patio and
gazed across the street. She wondered what it would be like to live
over there for just one day.

The woman on the dark side of the street coughed. She wasn't feeling
very well. She had this cough for over a month now. There wasn't any
money for medicine but somehow she found a reason to smile. It was a
beautiful day and the children were playing down the street. She loved
the smell of autumn in the air. She looked across the street. She
noticed that the rich woman didn't look very happy. She wondered why.

The woman on the sunny side of the street goes inside. She takes off her
sunglasses to reveal a black eye. She wonders if anyone heard the
terrible argument that occured last night. She would feel shame if they
did. How could she hold her head up if anyone knew the truth? How she
envied the woman across the street. She always was smiling. She
wondered why someone with nothing could be so happy about life. She
wished she knew the secret. She wanted what she had.

The woman on the dark side of the street felt sorry for the rich woman.
Of course, she had money and friends, but something good was missing.
Her eyes were empty. There was no glow to her cheeks. No life inside.
Maybe she could help. She went inside and cut up some pie and made a
thermos of coffee.

She walked across the street with her small token of friendship.

The woman on the sunny side of the street was baffled. Why would she
want to visit me? What does she want? Money?

The woman came over and shook her hand. "I know we have been living
across the street for ages, but I always wanted to meet you. I never
had the courage to come over until today." Hello, my name is Susan.. She
smiled at her. She gave the rich woman the pie and coffee.

The rich woman wept. "You know many people visit me to just look at what
I have. Many people envy me and want to be like me. This is what I am
really like." She took off her sunglasses to reveal her black eye.

"Oh my! You need a doctor now. Let me drive you there?"

"You would do that for me, a stranger?"

"Yes. Not a stranger anymore. A friend."

She took her hand and helped her in the car. Compassion check mated Envy
and Friendship conquers Fear.

"It will be alright from now on. Open your heart. You never know what
goes on across a tiny street. A friend is only a few feet away that can
turn your life around.

"Let's see if we can take care of that cough."

Two women as different as day and night.

"Right after we call the police and make sure you are safe."

"Thanks for looking out for me."

"I just care. What is life without compassion?"

"Nothing except empty envy and jealousies."

Envy

He was the first always: Fortune
Shone bright in his face.
I fought for years; with no effort
He conquered the place:
We ran; my feet were all beeding,
But he won the race.

Spite of his many successes,
Men loved him the same;
My one pale ray of good fortune
Met scoffing and blame.
When we erred, they gave him pity,
But me -- only shame.

My home was still in the shadow,
His lay in the sun:
I longed in vain: what he asked for
It straightway was done.
Once I staked all my heart's treasure,
We played -- and he won.

Yes, and just now I have seen him,
Cold, smiling, and blest,
Laid in his coffin. God help me!
While he is at rest,
I am cursed still to live: -- even
Death loved him the best.

"More Like Her"

She's beautiful in her simple little way
She don't have too much to say when she gets mad
She understands she don't let go of anything
Even when the pain gets really bad
Guess I should've been more like that

You had it all for a pretty little while
And some how you made me smile when I was sad
You took a chance on a bruised and beaten heart
Then you realized you wanted what you had
I guess I should've been more like that

I should have held on to my pride
I should have never let you lie
I guess you got what you deserved
I guess I should've been more like her

Forgiving you, she's stronger than I am
You don't look much like a man from where I'm at
It's plain to see desperation showed it's truth
You love her and she loves you with all she has
I guess I should've been more like that

I should have held on to my pride
I should have never let you lie
I guess you got what you deserved
I guess I should've been more like her

She's beautiful in her simple, little way

Jealousy

Jealousy is enraged
In the hearts of those
Who cannot achieve
The greatness of others.

Jealousy is enraged
In the minds of those
Who believe they are
Superior to others.

Jealousy is enraged
In the souls of those
Who do everything to help
But wish to do nothing but hinder.

Jealousy is enraged
In the hearts of those
Who are big men
On very little campuses

Jealousy is enraged
In the minds of those
Who are outranked
By those of lesser experience

Jealousy is enraged
In the souls of those
Whose hearts have been blackened
By years of fruitless labor

Jealousy is enraged
In the hearts of those
Who cannot achieve
The greatness of others.

Adonis and Aphrodite: A Myth about Beauty and Love

Date: Unknown

"The first myth of Aphrodite and Adonis involves the man's parents and is a story about beauty, love and jealousy. Adonis’ mother was the beautiful Myrrha or Smyrna and his father, King Cinyrus of Cyprus, who was actually the father of Myrrha.

This strange parentage of Adonis came about because Goddess Aphrodite was jealous of Myrrha’s beauty and caused the girl to unite with her own father.

When Cinyrus found out that he had been tricked, he chased Myrrha with a sword, intending to kill both her and her unborn child. Aphrodite, repenting of her deed, quickly turned the girl into a myrrh tree."

Dialogue Poem

I wonder if he could see
The pain that is hurting me; I can't break free
I finally saw what else is there
Other than the girl standing here

I'm left alone, with him sitting there in company of another girl
My heart begins to crinkle as I think of the other, my muscles begin to curl

These words are heartfelt and sweet
It makes my heart stop a beat
Lost and invidious, thinking how could this be
The past that we had is lost at sea

I know the girl behind was my world but now is sad
Should I feel bad?

I guess this is it, the end of you and me
Just go to with the prettier girl and leave me be

A Day at the Park

It was a summer day with all the birds singing and the bright yellow light shining in the room. Jessica started her day with her mom yelling at her to get up at 8 o’clock in the morning. She laid there for a while and texted her lover. They are supposed to go for a walk in the park later on and sit on the chair where they always sat. Usually, Jessica is happy to see him but she finally has to tell him something that he needs to know. He thinks everything is good in their relationship, little does he know; Jessica has a deep dark secret. No one knows about this secret besides her and another person, this could tear them apart forever.
As she gets ready, someone calls her from an unknown number, it’s Ryan.  He desperately needs to talk to her. He tells her to meet him in their secret spot. Jessica thinks this is urgent, so she blows off Jake and heads off to the spot. As she continues to walk, she feels guilty for lying to Jake and the only thing on her mind is her secret. She turns the corner and sees Ryan sitting there on the swings. She gets butterflies in her stomach every time she sees his bright green eyes and his dark brown hair. She hesitantly walks over and sees Ryan with a tiny black box. Now, the only thing on her mind is what’s in the box. Ryan continues to tell her how much she means to him and gives her a red rose. Since they have been dating over a year, he thinks their relationship should move forward. Jessica doesn’t know what to do, since she’s supposedly with Jake. Jessica is all confused with this situation. All of a sudden Ryan gets on one knee and asks Jessica to spend the rest of her life with him. Without hesitation she says yes, but standing behind her is Jake. Jake has the resentment look on his face. Apparently, Jake was going to ask Jessica to be his wife and already bought the diamond ring. As Ryan heard all of this, he ran off to his house with distress. Awkwardly, Jessica just stood there while Jake stared at her with envious eyes.
The wind starts to blow furiously and clouds begin to turn grey. Unexpectedly, the clouds produce rain and the lightning scared Jessica and lead them to talk in Jake’s car.  As they continued to talk, Jessica realized she made a big mistake. Jake was furious with her and started yelling and kicked Jessica out of the car. He drove off and left Jessica standing in the middle of the rain. She called her mother to pick her up from the park and while she was waiting, Ryan calls her cell phone. Apparently, Jake drove to Ryan’s house and started to fight him. Jake was angry that Ryan had been with Jessica all this time.  Ryan tells her that he didn’t mean things to go that far. Jessica is worried about what had happened. He begins to say that he didn’t want to hurt Jake but he was just getting in the middle of things. Jessica starts to cry and demands him to tell her. Jake arrives at the hospital with a broken arm, black eye and a bloody lip. Jessica is all upset and tells her mother to drive her to the hospital.
When Jessica arrives to the hospital, she realizes that she loves Jake more than she loves Ryan. Jessica finally has the guts to break it off with Ryan and tells him that she wants to stay with Jake. Ryan flips out and starts banging on the walls. Jessica can stand this anymore and throws the ring on the floor. She returns to the seat next Jake in the hospital as he consults to the doctor. When Jake finds out what Jessica did, he fills the room with excitement.
Few weeks went by, Jessica meets Jake at the park and sees that there is rose pedals spread out on the ground spelling out, “Will you marry me?” Jessica enthusiastically says yes and Jake puts the diamond ring on her finger. As they kiss, there are people in the background playing their song.

Critique #2 -"Jealousy"

When people become jealous, they have different expressions and emotions. Some express anger, sadness or even hostility. Others might not express any emotions but inside they’re having difficulty dealing with it. Judith Redman’s work reminds people of Edvard Munch’s work with jealousy. She dedicates her art work to express emotions that people see every day in society. In the painting, “Jealousy”, Judith Redman emphasizes on cool colors and abstract contrast in order to express the value of how people show facial expressions of envy.
Redman paints portraits and paintings of how people see others in society showing their emotions towards jealousy. She uses cool colors to highlight the importance of strong feelings of others. There’s a dark shade of blues in the background which symbolizes the gloomy and depressing feelings faced by people in society. Many people uses the word “blue” to show how one is sick, disappointed or depressed. The blues in the background causes the viewer to focus on the three bright yellow faces in the middle. The colors show how one can see the miserable facial expressions that are depicted by the effects of jealousy.
The contrast of the blues and yellows in the painting emphasize the importance of how people express jealousy. In the painting, it is dark blue in the background and bright yellow faces upfront which makes the painting balanced and have realism composition. The facial expression of the bigger woman’s face is more serious and miserable than the other women’s faces. Her face is upfront and more noticeable. The other two faces are more tenuous but still show how people are depressed by the input of envy. Their mouths show the lack of emotions and how people distance themselves from society and everyone around them.

The expressions of one’s face impacts on how others discerned their emotions. Most people either want to get revenge or distance themselves from the situation that is making them jealous. Their facial expression can determine which one they want to do. In the painting, “Jealousy,” Judith Redman provides cool colors and abstract contrast to show the importance of people’s facial expressions of envious. Many people demonstrate different actions to express their emotions.

Painting and Sculpture of Envy

(painting)
Artist: Francois Lemoyne

Artist: Gustav Vigeland

Critique #1

During the isolation of time, Edvard Munch expressed his feelings through his artwork. These emotions were from his past experiences. The paintings would be about the feelings that he found unacceptable in people, such as jealousy, hostility and depression. To release these painful emotions, Munch creatively showed it through his artwork. In the painting, “Envy,” Edvard Munch carefully uses vivid facial expression, severe realism and opposite composition in order to express jealousy and loneliness that people feel every day.
In the painting, the man’s face shows how people distance themselves from others and society. The artist uses complementary colors to emphasize the man’s facial expression showing a strong feeling of both misery and jealousy. The shade under his eyes shows how tired he is. By feeling lonely, from the blissful couple standing in the background in a doorway, the man suffers from being distanced from everything else in the world. The dull skinny face symbolizes how lost and jealous people get from being alone. Jealousy makes people want to get away from everyone and be distant from society.
Munch uses severe realism in the painting to emphasize how jealousy is present in everyday life.  When someone is jealous of something else, such as love or a couple in love makes them take drastic actions. Some could cause destruction to their relationship or deal with it alone. Munch isolates the man from the couple and is left alone. As the couple continues to be happy and full of life, the man continues to feel lonely and hopeless. While the man continues to see them happy, it makes him feel worse than before.
Munch contrasts the couple’s emotions and the man’s emotions to make the painting balanced. In the background of this painting, the elated couple is showing their love for each other while the man is isolated and is jealous of their happiness.  The opposite composition of the couple’s and man’s feelings comes together to form unity. When couples are happy and enjoying life, others become jealous and feel replaced from their contentment. When people become jealous, they tend to take their anger or get revenge on the situation.
Munch realized that his artwork resembled unpleasant emotions that people see everyday. Most of his paintings represent painful experiences from his past. The artwork shows emotions such as anger, envy and misery. Edvard Munch uses vivid facial expression, severe realism and opposite composition, in the painting “Envy”, in order to show the feeling of jealousy and loneliness that people notice every day.

Envy

The concept that I chose for Writing & Visual Imagination is envy. Envy is when someone gets jealous of someone else or something else for the silliest reasons and they feel less important to them. I feel that envy would be an interesting concept to do. Envy could challenge me in finding pictures and other materials. I feel that people would do drastic actions because of their jealousy of others. Envy would be fascinating to study.
